Quick answer: generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of making your content easy for AI tools like chat assistants and AI search features to find, understand, and cite. It builds on good SEO, and the practical steps are clear answers, well-structured pages, visible expertise, trustworthy sources, and making sure AI crawlers can reach your site.

More people now get answers from AI assistants and AI-generated summaries instead of a list of links. That raises a fair question for anyone with a website: how do you get mentioned in those answers? This beginner’s guide explains generative engine optimisation in plain English, what you can actually do about it, and what to be sceptical of.

Nobody outside the AI providers knows exactly how their systems choose sources, and the tools change quickly. Treat everything here as good practice, not guaranteed tactics.

What is generative engine optimisation?

Generative engine optimisation, usually shortened to GEO, is about earning visibility inside AI-generated answers. Traditional SEO aims to rank a page in a list of search results. GEO aims to have your content used, summarised, or cited when an AI tool writes an answer.

The two overlap heavily. Pages that are clear, accurate, well organised, and from a credible source tend to do well in both.

GEO versus SEO: what is different?

Traditional SEOGEO
GoalRank highly in search resultsBe used or cited in AI-generated answers
What gets rewardedRelevance, authority, and usabilityClear, self-contained answers from credible sources
Typical success signalClicks from search resultsMentions, citations, and referral visits from AI tools
Content styleComprehensive pagesComprehensive pages with direct, quotable answers

In short, GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is SEO’s habits, applied with an AI reader in mind.

How to optimise your content for AI search

I find it best to stick to the same principles for GEO as for SEO. It is so new that there is no guide to being number one, and the sites that seem to do well in AI results tend to be the ones with strong SEO.

  1. Answer the question first. Put a short, direct answer near the top, then expand. AI tools favour content they can lift a clear answer from. You’ll see this pattern in the quick-answer box at the top of each post on this blog.
  2. Use question-style headings. Headings that mirror how people ask questions make your structure easy to match to a query.
  3. Structure for scanning. Short paragraphs, lists, and tables are easier to parse and to cite than dense blocks of text.
  4. Show real expertise. Name the author, link to an author page, and include first-hand experience. Credible, identifiable sources are easier to trust.
  5. Back claims with sources. Link to authoritative references and be accurate. Careless or unsupported claims are a risk to your reputation with both readers and AI tools.
  6. Add structured data where it fits. Schema markup, such as FAQ and author information, helps machines understand what a page contains. The shared vocabulary for this is maintained at Schema.org.
  7. Keep content fresh. Show when a page was last updated and review it when facts change.
  8. Be consistent about who you are. Use the same name, description, and profile details across your site and public profiles so your identity is clear.

Can AI tools even access your site?

A technical point that is easy to miss: if your site blocks AI crawlers, those tools may not be able to read your content at all. Check your robots.txt file and any security or bot-protection settings, and decide deliberately which crawlers you allow. Some site owners choose to block them, which is a legitimate choice, but it should be a choice rather than an accident.

How do you measure GEO?

This is still an immature area, so be realistic.

  • Look for referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics. Remember that your analytics only sees a share of visitors, as we explained in how much of your traffic your analytics misses.
  • Test real questions. Ask AI tools the questions your customers ask and note whether your brand or content appears.
  • Track brand mentions and branded searches over time.
  • Watch your existing SEO metrics. Strong SEO foundations support GEO.

What to be sceptical of

Because GEO is new, there is plenty of hype. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed placement in AI answers, secret tricks, or dramatic results from a single tweak. There are no shortcuts. Consistently publishing accurate, well-structured, expert content remains the most dependable approach.

Generative engine optimisation FAQ

What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It means optimising your content so that AI tools and AI search features can find, understand, and cite it in generated answers.

Is GEO different from SEO?

They overlap heavily. SEO aims to rank pages in search results, while GEO aims to have content used or cited in AI-generated answers. Good SEO foundations support GEO.

How do I get my website cited by AI tools?

Publish clear, accurate, well-structured content with direct answers, show real expertise and sources, add structured data where appropriate, keep pages up to date, and make sure AI crawlers can access your site.

No. Nobody outside the AI providers knows exactly how sources are chosen, and the systems change. Good content and sound technical foundations improve your chances but cannot guarantee results.
